This week in Australian foreign affairs: Australia announced several statements regarding the recent Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, two new initiatives strengthening bilateral ties with Japan, plans to welcome the Solomon Islands’ newly elected Prime Minister, and more.
On 22 May, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade published the recipients of the Australia-Indonesia Institute grants program for 2025–26, as well as the ASEAN-Australia Centre’s 2025–26 grants program, reflecting continued investment in people-to-people and institutional ties across the Indo-Pacific.
The Department of Defence announced its support for a multinational effort to assist Pacific partners in combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing across the South Pacific. The announcement was also accompanied by the arrival of Australia’s 14th P-8A Poseidon aircraft, completing the Royal Australian Air Force’s maritime patrol fleet and strengthening Australia’s sovereign maritime surveillance capabilities.
On 25 May, Foreign Minister Penny Wong travelled to New Delhi, to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and hold the Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue. Following meetings with her counterparts from Japan, India, and the United States, the Foreign Minister’s office released a sequence of statements, including a joint statement, a factsheet, the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative Framework, and a Statement on Indo-Pacific Energy Security. The Minister visit marks a significant step in the progression of Australia’s Quad commitments.
The same day, Minister Wong reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to enhance diplomatic ties with Japan, as both countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of their friendship treaty. Two new initiatives were announced to formalise this ongoing commitment, the establishment of annual ministerial talks and a diplomatic exchange program embedding Australian and Japanese diplomats within each other’s foreign ministries. The initiatives aim to institutionalise cooperation, ensuring continuity of the bilateral relationship in an era of uncertainty.
Later in the week, Foreign Minister Wong and Minister for Pacific Island Affairs, the Hon Pat Conroy, issued a joint statement alongside New Zealand and Tonga celebrating the completion of Tonga’s second international undersea cable. Jointly funded by Australia and New Zealand, the cable strengthens Tonga’s digital connectivity and contributes to broader regional security and resilience.
On 27 May, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced he will welcome the Solomon Islands’ Prime Minister, the Hon Matthew Wale CBE, for a Leaders’ Meeting on 3 June. Prime Minister Wale’s travels to the capital mark the first official international visit since taking office earlier this month, and further reflects Australia’s sustained engagement with its Pacific neighbour.
Also this week, the Prime Minister’s office and Minister for Sport the Hon Anika Wells announced that the government will invest $12.4 million in supporting this year’s Rugby League World Cup. The funding aims to ensure the successful planning, delivery, and logistics of the event that is to be hosted across nine cities in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.
Prime Minister Albanese opened this year’s National Reconciliation Week with an Address to the Walk for Truth. In his speech, the Prime Minister recognised the leadership of Australia’s First Nations peoples and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continued dialogue and engagement with Traditional Owners of the land.
The Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Richard Marles, announced on 28 May that he will be joining multiple leaders across the Indo-Pacific in travelling to Singapore to attend the 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue. Before coming back to Australia, the Deputy Prime Minister will stop in India to meet with his Indian counterpart for the second Australia-India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in his capacity as Minister of Defence.
