Vale: Professor John Legge AO FAIIA

AIIA Fellow and AIIA VIC member Professor John Legge AO FAIIA passed away last week at the age of 94.

Professor Legge was appointed to the foundation Chair of History at Monash University in 1960 and served in that position until 1977. From 1978 to 1986 he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts. From 1964 till 1986 he chaired the Monash Centre of Southeast Asian Studies. In 1969-70 he was Director of the Singapore Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. In 1987-93 he was an Executive Member on the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Board.

Professor Legge was elected to the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1964 and was recently appointed a Jubilee Fellow. In 1988 he was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for ‘service to education, particularly in the field of Asian Studies and international relations’.

Professor Legge was a member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs in Victoria since 1947, and wrote its history Australian Outlook (1999). He was honoured as a Fellow of the AIIA in 2012.

A service is being held at 2pm on Friday 12 February at the Religious Centre, Building 38 Exhibition Walk, Monash University Clayton Campus. Refreshments will follow at The Monash Staff Club in Building 32 Exhibition Walk (map link: Monash University Clayton Campus Map colour).

Professor Legge will be sorely missed.
