About Us

The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent, non-profit organisation seeking to promote interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia.

The WA Branch of the AIIA was founded in 1947 by Professor Fred Alexander of the University of WA, who became its first President. Like the earlier established branches in the other Australian states, the WA Branch was modelled on the British Royal Institute of International Affairs, based at Chatham House in London.

The WA Branch has maintained a steady membership, including many prominent West Australian and national leaders. Successive State Governors have served as the Branch’s Official Visitor. The aim of the institute is to be an independent and non-political body that facilitates and encourages the study and debate of international questions.

Membership fees includes a subscription to The Australian Journal of International Affairs as well as entry to our monthly meetings where you will learn about the latest developments in international affairs. We rely on membership contributions and sponsorship of special events to keep our association running: we receive no core funding from government.

What We Do

The AIIA WA holds monthly meetings where leading academics and professionals practicing in the field of international relations share their work and knowledge. Our meetings always include Q&A.  We also run pop up events throughout the year when speakers become available a short notice.

Our events are open to anyone.  But members enjoy subsidised entry into our monthly meetings and special events, as well as an online subscription to the AIIA’s flagship publication The Australian Journal of International Affairs, and a discount subscription to The Economist.

The AIIA WA receives no core funding from government. We are funded by membership subscriptions and the proceeds from ticket sales to our meetings and events. Donations are also welcome. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and can be made online here.

While donations over AU$500 qualify donors to be recognised as an official Friend of the AIIA in the Annual Report, all donations are gratefully received and are tax deductible. A receipt will be issued automatically for donations made online via the GiveNow*.

Your contribution, whether modest or substantial, will be allocated to the area of greatest need enable the AIIA WA to continue to thrive.

Young Professionals Network

Are you a young professional studying international relations or simply interested in what’s happening in the world around you? The AIIA WA Branch offers a casual, friendly environment for meeting others with a similar interest in international affairs, as well as a place for stimulating conversation and debate. There are monthly seminars as well as specific YPN events throughout the year.

To find out more, please feel free to email our Convener, Mr Connor Clarke, at wa.branch@internationalaffairs.org.au or go to the membership page.

The AIIA receives advanced notice of prominent speakers and, for our YPN members, we try to organise special offers such as discounted rates for upcoming events. Members are sent notice of the meeting and asked to register on our events page to confirm attendance.
