Foreign Policy Challenges Facing the Federal Government

How will the newly appointed Abbott government handle the numerous and varied foreign policy challenges and opportunities of the modern era, and what can be said of its performance six months on from the election. The Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria hosted a presentation by Mr John McCarthy AO, AIIA National President and former Australian Ambassador spoke about the many foreign policy challenges facing the Federal Government.

Mr John McCarthy has a long and distinguished career in the diplomatic service, serving as High Commissioner to India and as Ambassador to Japan, Indonesia, the United States of America, Thailand, Mexico and Vietnam, and in postings in Syria, Baghdad and Vietnam. He retired from DFAT in 2009 and has since had a range of advisory positions with Government and in business.
