Our democratic structure
The current AIIA Constitution is an updated expression of the original Articles of Association first enacted in 1933, themselves a reflection of the ideals adopted by the AIIA’s founding branches from the 1920s. While we have come a long way since then, the values of the organisation have always centred around its neutrality, independence, and federal character. Individual members of the AIIA are members of the branches, and each branch is an independent member of the national body with its own constitution, democratically elected governing body, and significant input into the formation of national policies. You can contribute to the life of the AIIA by becoming a member of your local branch and speaking to its leadership about pitching in!

Australia's most transparent think tank on foreign policy
Independence and the trust of the Australian public are crucial to our work. The AIIA is therefore a strong advocate for transparency in the think tank sector and has long been identified as Australia’s most transparent think tank working on international affairs. The national body declares, in principle, all donations above $100 on its website and in its annual review, and it does not accept anonymous donations. It declares all relationships with partners who support its projects and publications financially or otherwise, and the CEO of the organisation must ensure that no partner of the institute will determine the outcome of research that they support.

Fostering an environment where all are welcome
The AIIA’s diversity and inclusion guidelines create a welcoming, attractive atmosphere for all potential participants who wish to engage in the debate and discussion on international affairs and foreign policy. As independent organisations, the state and territory branches of the institute have their own guidelines on diversity and inclusion. If you would like to know more about such policies at local AIIA events, please contact your relevant branch.
