Phil Hogan was a member of the Irish Parliament for 27 years.
He served as Chairman of Fine Gael party and director of organisation during its most successful years from 2002 to 2011 which culminated in his appointment as Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government in the government led by Enda Kenny as Taoiseach. Phil Hogan became European Union (EU) President of Environment Council in 2013 during Ireland’s presidency of EU Council.
Phil Hogan brings over three decades of leadership in agriculture, trade and international diplomacy to his campaign for Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). In 2014, he was nominated as EU Commissioner for Agriculture and rural development where he played a major role to reform the CAP and make it more supportive of environmental challenges as well as food security objectives. Food exports and employment increased substantially during his term of office. In this role he helped shape the policies that underpin European and global food systems negotiating landmark trade agreements, steering the EU through market crises, and representing Europe at the G20, World Trade Organization (WTO) and United Nations (UN).
In 2019–2020, Phil Hogan served as European Commissioner for Trade, directing the EU’s trade policy for the world’s largest trading bloc. He championed WTO reform, ensured supply chain continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and advanced multiple Free Trade Agreements embedding high standards for sustainable development.
