Doctor Stephanie Koorey was awarded her PhD from the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University in 2009. Her doctoral thesis examined small arms control and violent non-state actors in Southeast Asia. Her previous tertiary education was undertaken in the United Kingdom at the University of London, where she went on to complete a Master of Arts at Bradford University in Peace and Security Studies with a thesis that focussed on British arms sales to Saudi Arabia. She is known as an arms control, conflict and security studies scholar, with a focus on conventional arms and international law.
Stephanie has spent the last 20 years in academia and Defence, with a particular focus on joint professional military education at the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Australian War College (formerly the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies), and Russell OƯices. She has published widely in the grey and academic literature, with her last academic paper on lethal autonomous weapons systems co-authored with the late Allan Gyngell. Her previous career was with non-government organisations including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International in roles that included research, campaigning, fundraising and media liaison. Stephanie retired in 2025 to focus on personal interests.
