Mark Doidge is a Senior Research Fellow in Sociology of Sport at University of Brighton.
Mark originally studied Law at Kingston University before embarking upon a career in business with a telecommunications multinational. After the company relocated to China, he returned to higher education, originally taking an MA in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter and focused on sport in the Ancient World. His interest in sport continued through completion of a PhD (also at the University of Exeter) that investigated football, politics and fan identity in Italian football.
He has developed this research interest in European football fandom with a UEFA University Grant to assess anti-racism in Poland, Germany and Italy. A University of Brighton Rising Star award funded a project to understand pan-European fan organisations. These provided a firm foundation for an ESRC Future Leaders application to assess football fandom as Europe’s leading social movement.
Mark teaches on a wide range of undergraduate modules related to the sociology of sport, politics and sports policy. He has also taught at the University of Exeter and St Mary’s University College, Twickenham where he taught a range of sociology and sociology of sport modules.
Mark is an active member of the British Sociology Association, and whilst a postgraduate, Mark was convenor of the Postgraduate Forum. He is currently a convenor on the Early Career Forum for the British Sociological Association. This forum exists to help early career researchers as they begin their post-PhD careers. Through this relationship he has co-edited a book entitled Sociologists’ Tales (Policy Press, Bristol) . Mark is also membership secretary of the BSA Sport Study Group.
