Viewed from Washington, East Asia now comes under the heading of ‘trouble’. The Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria hosted Professor Richard Tanter who shared his insights on America’s East Asian alliances. Professor Tanter addresses how the Obama administration is handling the tensions of East Asia, how these tensions will play out in the region and what it all mean for Australia.

Richard Tanter is a Professor in the School of Political and Social Studies at the University of Melbourne, and Senior Research Associate at the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability.  Professor Tanter is a leading analyst on East Asia, which he has been researching since the 1970s, with his research focusing on militarization and peace issues in Indonesia, Korea and Japan.
