Public Diplomacy Through Media in the Digital Era

Tuesday 15th April 2014 6:00pm AEDT

Hosted by: The AIIA ACT Branch

A Presentation by Ms Lynley Marshall, Chief Executive Officer, ABC International

International broadcasting is a fiercely contested space. Broadcasters have no choice but to adjust their strategies to match the consumption habits of demanding audiences.  The nature of a contemporary international media service is now multiplatform, multilingual and supported by strong regional media partnerships.

A new agreement between ABC International and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that came into effect on July 1 2013 acknowledges the need for a new approach. It provides for the delivery of an integrated media strategy comprising Australia Network, Radio Australia and Australia Plus – our digital, online, mobile and social media service.

Lynley Marshall will provide an insight into how digital media is expanding the reach of Australian stories and engaging more local audiences.

Lynley was appointed CEO, ABC International in June 2012. She led the convergence of the ABC’s international services, which includes Australia Network television, Radio Australia, ABC International Development, International Relations and a range of digital, multiplatform and multilingual services under the umbrella of Australia Plus.

Lynley also served as Director of ABC Commercial from February 2007 to develop the ABC’s commercial businesses including ABC DVD, ABC Music, ABC Publishing, ABC International Sales, ABC Events, ABC Retail and ABC Shop Online and to pursue new business opportunities in the digital media environment.

Prior to this, Lynley served as Director New Media & Digital Services responsible for integrated delivery of the ABC’s digital content, including ABC Online, ABC2, Video On Demand, interactive television, mobile and other emerging platforms.

Before joining the ABC, Lynley held a number of executive positions in radio, television and new media in New Zealand. She has an Executive MBA from the University of Auckland and has served on the Board of Fisher & Paykel.
