Citing the rise of strident nationalism globally and President Trump’s disturbing comments on nuclear proliferation, this year atomic scientists moved the Doomsday Clock forward to two and a half minutes to midnight. Not since the Cold War have concerns about nuclear war been this widespread.

From threatening to pull out of the Iran deal to encouraging Japan and South Korea to pursue nuclear weapons programs in the face of a belligerent North Korea, Trump has eschewed the traditional American line on non-proliferation. Have Trump’s comments endangered the fragile Iran deal and ignited a new nuclear arms race?

Chair of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters Dr Trevor Findlay spoke with the President of AIIA NSW Richard Broinowski prior to his presentation to AIIA NSW on 21 February 2017.

Dr Trevor Findlay is the Chair of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters and Principal Fellow in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
